This is undoubtedly one of the finest books I’ve ever read about grief, and trust me, I’ve read dozens of them. Tom Zuba speaks with the authentic voice of one who knows first-hand the experience of unspeakable loss, not only as a twice-bereaved parent but as a surviving spouse as well. His words are simple but eloquent, and thus very easy to read and to comprehend ~ which is important to those in the early throes of grief, who may find it difficult to concentrate. I was able to read the entire book in one sitting ~ mainly because once started, I couldn’t put it down. The content is clinically accurate and reliable, in that it reflects the most current research and thinking of noted experts in the field of grief and loss. What is more, it is delivered in a manner that is filled with hope, wisdom and love. I will not hesitate to recommend it highly to clients and colleagues. If you know someone who is grieving, I cannot think of a more thoughtful gift than this beautiful book.
My son died of a heroin overdose in May of 2016. This book was originally given to me by my sister the day of Neil's memorial. It took almost a month to gather the courage to even open the book but once I started I couldn't put it down until I finished it. It is easy to read and well written so that you can read and digest the information a little at a time. It had such a healing effect on me that I have made a ministry of giving copies away to anyone I meet that is fighting to survive the death of a loved one. I highly recommend it to everyone.
He said a lot of things I already knew, but I needed someone to tell me that had the experience so that I know that he is right, and that he is strong enough to emphatically get that across to me. It isn't long, but I read it all in one sitting very late one night and was not planning to do so. I could not put it down. Yes, I cried. Like I knew, he tells you that you must. Believe him. He has suffered like not many of us have, thank goodness, so he knows and he came out alive and whole. We can too.
This is one of the best books I have read on grieving and I have read many. I cried through a lot of the book BECAUSE Tom was speaking directly to me. So much of my short journey is just like Tom talked about in his book. I will re read this and hopefully I can practice some of his suggestions.
I haven't read this book. But I purchased it for my mom following the recent loss of my beloved stepfather. I picked it based on all the positive reviews I saw on Amazon, and I'm so happy to report that those glowing reviews are echoed in her praise. My mother has read it three times, cover to cover and hasn't stopped thanking me for the gift. She quotes it constantly and in many ways it's been her most important support line through the chaos swirling inside. This is not a book for saps. Based on my mother's experience as a morning reader, I can wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone suffering from the most profound loss of a loved one. If you are one of those people, so sorry for your loss. I hope the book speaks to you.
After the untimely death of my beloved daughter I received many books about grief from friends, I bought some myself, but found I couldn't get past more than a page or two in any of them. My grief was too overwhelming to concentrate on all the well-meaning, and I'm sure, well-written books. Then I was told to find Tom Zuba's book, "Permission to Mourn". Thankfully, I did procure it, and it still is the only book that I could read. It is thoughtful, compassionate, understanding, knowledgeable, loving, kind, and absolutely right on! Tom has walked the walk, and easily imparted what I needed to hear in a very concise manner. The book is easy to read, and can be completed in an hour or two. I cannot recommend this book more highly. If you have lost a loved one, please read this book.
As someone who is three and a half years on the grief journey after the passing of my 26 y.o. daughter, I found this book to provide encouragement and direction that so many who are grieving need. I read it in one sitting (including time for a few tears). The author discusses the need to go through the grief at your own pace, and the need to make conscious decisions on some emotionally difficult things. It feels very personal because the author shares so much of himself in it. It is beautifully written. I would recommend it for anyone who is grieving. It is a book that I will be giving to others who are grieving after a “loss.â€
Not being new to grief by any means but new as a widow, Tom's words resonated enough that I opted to do my first 'class' with him December 2017. Did several in 2018 and am scheduled for upcoming class of 2019. Over the last 14 months, I've learned that there's great benefit to being with ones who understand sorrow, who aren't going to shrug their shoulders because I'm not 'over M. and moved on' yet. Tom is a facilitator who truly knows and understands what it's like to lose not only his spouse but a daughter and son as well. His style of writing is different, but sometimes, that's what is needed! Bravo to him for exposing his pain and journey to help others! May God bless Tom!
