I have been reading military history since i was a kid. I bought this for my son because he needs to move beyond graphic novels and he is very interested in WW2. This book has been so simplified that it has become inaccurate, drawing broad and incorrect conclusions. There are numerous typos and repeated lines of text, and the writing style is poor. For example, the book mentions the Japanese firing torpedoes at aircraft during the battle of Midway. Huh? Second, it gives MacArthur credit for developing war plan Orange. He didn't develop it, and he didn't follow it. Frequently ships are misidentified and the entire campaign of Guadalcanal is described without ever mentioning that the US controlled the sea during the day, forcing the Japanese to only reinforce at night and then without any heavy equipment. I get trying to simplify the text, but geez, this book is trash.
I just finished reading this amazing book. I believe this book was written for young adult boys; however, I am a 70-year-old woman and I thought it was great. I learned and re-learned so much about the many battles in the Pacific area during World War II. My understanding is that this author, Joe Giorello, teaches "Battles for Boys." If I had a teacher and book like this when I was young I know I would have enjoyed history much more than I did. Basically, I remember having to learn and remember dates of battles more than what they were about. There are a lot of gruesome descriptions in this book about the conditions our military faced while fighting, including how POWs were treated and mis-treated, but I believe that is a necessary and important part of the stories. Kids today playing video games have a lot of fun shooting up the enemy. This book teaches them that war is in no way fun.Now I'm looking forward to reading Great Battles for Boys: WW2 in Europe by the same author, which I ordered both in book format as well as the Kindle format. The author lists websites and YouTube sites at the ends of many of the stories. With this book in Kindle format you can just click on the web sites or You-Tube sites listed and you are taken directly to them. He also lists movies that have been made of some of the battles. I bought the books in paperback so that I can pass them on to my grandsons AFTER I read them. Please give these books a read, no matter what age you are. The author of these books does an amazing job of telling the stories of war.
We bought one in the series to test it out, and our 12 year-old son couldn’t wait to get the rest. He’s re-read them many times, and likes to tell us all the facts.Well-written, and intriguing enough to hold this high energy boy’s interest! We homeschool, and he learned more from these battle books than from any other curriculum or textbook.
This is a terrific book. I am reading it to my 12 year old, but everyone else loves to listen in. The book beaks down and highlights the battles in an easy to understand fashion. There are even extra websites that you can click into to see short video clips or more information. Definitely getting other books in the series.
I bought this book for my Grandson (who is 10 years old) and he has been bypassing his game time to continue reading the book. He really enjoys reading about the different wars. The book is very well written.
My 12 year old son has read this about five times. I take it he really likes it.
A nine year old could write it way to many typeos to! But tells the storys good
Yes if you want a short history lesson on ww2 in the Pacific then you should read this book. It has a lot of good information.
