Kate Greasley, Lecturer in Law, University College LondonKate Greasley is a Lecturer in Law at University College London. After completing her doctorate in law at New College, Oxford, she was appointed to a Junior Research Fellowship in Law at University College, Oxford, from 2013 to 2016. Her research and teaching covers medical law and ethics, criminal law, and legal theory. She has written extensively to date about issues in abortion law and ethics, as well as other topics in bioethics, including assisted dying, property rights in human body parts, and the commercialization of human organs.

This is a recent scholarly work on an important subject (another is Carol Sanger’s ‘About Abortion’, 2017 Harvard). Kate Greasley examines not just the argument for and against abortion – she discusses a wide range of seemingly peripheral issue, each highly important on its own. These include ‘When is an early human being worthy of strong moral protection? When, if ever, is it justifiable to end life of another human being? And do we possess the fundamental right to life merely in virtue of being members of the human species, or in virtue of something else?’ Greaseley first makes a case that the moral status (personhood) of the foetus is central to discussions about abortion. Hence, whether a woman’s right to her body entitles her to defeat a foetus’ right to life? Greasely discusses this issue in great detail and considers arguments from all quarters. Chapter 5 discusses the basis when one can claim the moment when personhood is established – or, when does one become a person deserving of moral protection? The chapters that follow are intense and may appeal only to those interested in legal and philosophical issues. In this regard, Greaseley requires greater concentration than Sanger (although Sanger covers the subject from perspectives different from Greaseley). Sanger writes for everyone; Greaseley writes for the academic. Both are important books and deserve attention.
