Last year after watching War Room I was completely convicted that my prayer life needed to be a priority. I asked my pastor to recommend a book to help me learn more and this is the book he recommended. I found the content to be very 'deep' and so I chose to read one chapter a day and look up any scriptures and pray as things were revealed to me. This book has changed the way I pray and live. Each book has challenged me to see the truth of scripture, and its link to prayer. Seeing how the old and new testament saints have been men and women of prayer; seeing the possibilities of prayer and faith; seeing how preaching is 'dead' without prayer, and how God uses humble prayer to use his saints in a mighty way; It has taken me almost a year to reach the final book, but I look forward to beginning again when finished. I downloaded the kindle edition which makes it very portable. It also makes it easy to look up content that I have highlighted.I recommend this book to anyone who desires to grow in their walk with the Lord.
There are books that appear daunting when you first start them. Six volumes on prayer? To be frank, I thought he'd run out of things to say by volume two.Not so.E.M. Bounds lived in an atmosphere of prayer, what David called the "secret pavilion" or "the secret place of the Most High" "under the shelter of His wings", "the shadow of the Almighty".Few have been there. Few have actually made it their dwelling place.To be honest, I took this book up out of curiosity, thinking `what would somebody write for 6 volumes on prayer?'. Would they just tell me to pray more, harder, longer over and over? Yet, I knew that it probably wouldn't be a classic that many laud and few read, unless the guy was onto something. Taking the chance that "He who walks with the wise will himself become wise", I decided to take a long walk with Mr. Bounds in hopes that my understanding of and experience with prayer might improve. Reading this book was like taking a stroll with a giant. His stride should have left me in the dust, but he took into account my dwarf-like footsteps. Bounds takes into account that we need to be instructed, like the Twelve Disciples in prayer.Bounds was himself a student of prayer. He'd been a chaplain during the Civil War and he'd been wounded in the head. When reading that in the foreward, I imagined he might have had some brain damage and become a bit of an eccentric. I'd met guys like that who always talked about prayer, but quite frankly, were a bit strange. Bounds isn't like that. Instead, you get the impression that much time on a sick bed having a near brush with death caused this man of God to reassess everything that he held dear and stock take his priorities on this side of life. He couldn't do anything on that recovery bed but pray, and God took him by the hand and led him places he didn't know he could go.This book taught me to tweet. I was constantly tweeting through my kindle link because his one liners and nuggets of truth were simple and brief, yet profound.My overarching impression of the tone is one of victory, whereas most of the books in vogue today are about defeat. Whereas most books I read today are about doubt and prayer, Bounds's work is about faith and prayer. I appreciate books that are honest, but after a while, they can become a downer. This book was refreshingly different.My aim was to have it read during the year of 2012 by incorporating it into my quiet times, and I accomplished that. The question is: Did it accomplish what I'd hoped it would? The answer is Yes. You would think someone would run out of things to say about prayer but each time I read any chapter, I end up highlighting a lot of things he says. This is a great blessing. He discounts women praying, however, and implies men praying is more important and effective than women praying. I don't believe God is a respecter of persons including gender, but I think the author is a product of his times and thought men praying was more important to God's work than women praying (which I disagree with). Overall, it's still a blessing and I try not to get distracted by some people cultural ignorance and upbringing.
This review is for the format of this particular edition/publishing. The book itself is a must read for all believers I think, and gets 5-stars in Bounds' humility and exaltation of God and Christ, combined with his unique observations.I'm not a fan of this particular format. I own an older version of this, and purchased this one for a fellow-saint, and this one caught me off guard. It is workbook size- like full sheets of paper. Along with the narrow margin, this is exhausting on the eyes with how much text appears to be on the page. I know I should have looked at the dimensions on Amazon, but I was so excited to buy it as a gift, I trusted it would be consistent.It's just a preference, which is why my rating is 5-stars. I hope this helps someone!
