Great book to have for the Beginner handyman to have when bidding on commercial or residential work.Know what the going rate is in your industry and stop short changing yourself. Start making money and know how to bid on work right rather then guessing or trying to use hourly rate to figure out cost. I had a very old version but purchased new ones every few year to keep me on point. I made money and did great using these book.Before hand i would bid and shot myself in the foot bidding to low and not factoring in other work or certain factors when bidding.Then a gentleman (Jim) from a big builder was looking for an all around guy (handyman) to do punch list & warranty work that was flexible, willing to travel and dependable. Plus do great work in the process. Well i bid on the work but was to low and missing certain factors the company was looking for.Well Jim gave me my first book 22 years ago because he said i had the will and fight to run a good business without cutting corners or trying to cheat the customer like so many others try and do. Plus being a 2 year old company most people don't make it past the first year.Jim stated i needed the right tools to keep me competitive and business smart so the jobs i bid on look good to the customers i am bidding for.Yes i had insurance, bond, an accountant and was listed with the secretary of state & had a tax id and business account but needed the book to complement the business.What a great gift that in turn i have done with other guys starting out or i know have been struggling in business. Yes some guys are my competition but if Jim didn't help me out how would I've have known how to bid right on work. So i have paid it forward just like what Jim did for me and purchase a few books on Amazon for the competition i meet.
R S Means Contractors Pricing Guide for Residential Repair and Remolding is not all what the write up states. I was taking a college class which the professor had nothing but good things to say about R S Means and the quality of the information. Now that I have purchased the book and reviewed it I realize that it must be some other book he was talking about. I have a small construction business and purchased this catalog to get a better idea of pricing jobs allowing for more opportunity to win contracts. This was not the case for this area and thus not worth the purchase price.
I purchased this as a Christmas present for my son who is a remodeling contractor. He loves it because it makes it easier for him to create more accurate estimates and bids for his prospective customers. As of May 2014 he still uses this 2013 edition that is sitting on his business desk.
Great basic information to easily document and cost jobs. Bids are easily structured from the information provided and the information can be easily changed if prices in your area are different. For some reason, I don't recall seeing a section in their flooring chapter on laminate installation. I may be wrong.Books is always in my cab bag.
RS means writes and publishes good Cost Data books for professionals in the construction industry; this particular book is brand new, in good shape but contence was more for amatures or semi-pros not professional contractors. I didn't like it as much as their usual cost data books.
I have a some upgrades on our home and this has helped tremendously in getting competitive contractor quotes. Well worth the money and has helped me identify contractors that are not quite on the fair side.
The hardest part of my handyman business is pricing. Where I live/work overpricing isn't an option. Word spreads quickly and jobs stop coming. At the same time I still need to make a living for my family. This book takes a lot if the guesswork out of it. I can feel confident in my bids knowing I'm giving a fair price.
