Who gave this guy a Thesaurus for Christmas? Enjoy looking up words? Love wasting time and money? Want to be left confused and talked down to? Then this is the book for you! I love books.i love to read. I would never allow any harm to come to a resource of knowledge. But we are the Nazis out when you need them?(book burning joke.would never wish harm on anyone) you pay for shipping you can have mine.
Fenner always nails it when he writes about aqautic life.This book literally is called "The Bible for Saltwater" when you look at saltwater websites.As a person who has been in saltwater for a couple of years now, I can honestly say had I read this book when I first ventured into the hobby I would have saved myself and my wallet from some very foolish mistakes.Fenner's own website is filled with additional information on just about anything you can imagine. Using this book in conjuction with his website (just do a search under his name) and you'll have just about every resource you need other than a local fish store from where you can tap into additional knowledge and great prices on saltwater supplies.This book is an absolute MUST if you are thinking about getting into saltwater. It is also a good read for those that have experience in saltwater as the book is packed with knowledge that you may need a refresher course or reminder of to be a true conscientious hobbyist.
This book is on ReefCentral.com's reading list for those new to the hobby and it is easy to see why. Fenner gives a great introduction to keeping saltwater aquariums: fish, invertebrates, equipment, filtration, water, setup, aquascaping, feeding, diseases, etc. The advice on selecting and keeping fish is very practical. For example, when he discusses angelfish, he lists the species that do well in aquariums and the ones that should be avoided because they do not. His books also gives the reader a good basic understanding of compatability: you learn what types of fish and invertebrates you can put together and what types you can't.Fenner writes in a way that is fun to read. On top of it all, as he goes through fish collection methods and other issues, you also walk away with knowledge on how you the consumer can help influence practices in the fish trade by the choices you make.
This is a great book, top-notch quality both on the text, pictures, quality of the paper used and information provided. In my opinion just one thing could make this book even better: a better organization/rating system for the fishes/invertebrates covered. The author put a lot of text for each fish/invertabrate without a simple to read classification on wheter a beginner like myself should buy or not that particular animal. For that I am using the excellent The Complete Book of the Marine Aquarium [Hardcover] By Vincent B. Hargreaves, which provides a rating from 1 thru 5 on each animal depending on the complexity of keeping it on a fish tank.
I have used this book for years. I found it easy enough to read and help me through my first few years of dealing with marine tanks. And unlike a lot of my books from the beginning this one did have enough "meat" in it to still be relevant as I progressed through the hobby. Overall the content is great and it covers the gambit of marine life. On a different note, the paper and print is of a really great quality as well. This book takes a lot of use and abuse at my house and it really is still in suprisingly good condition. I only mentions this because some of the "cheaper" aquarium books I have picked up throught the years are all falling to pieces. Hope this helped!
I'll just start off by saying this is a great book for someone to start with, it touches on almost everything. The only problem I had was the beginning half of the book (mostly dealing with the tank) doesn't get detailed enough and then the 2nd part (livestock) was too in depth dealing with the anatomy and natural habitat etc.. with only 1 or 2 paragraphs out of 30 actually discussing how it would behave in a reef tank, and that's if you're lucky.I'm glad I bought this book, it's helped me get a handle on reef tanks, but it's not good enough to be the only book you'll need and it's not something you will likely reference due to the skill level it targets.
I love this book. I am a totally clueless new saltwater aquarium keeper who had no idea what I was getting into. Now that I know, I am so glad to have this book. It is incredibly helpful in setting up the aquarium and then in learning about fish. This book helped me select fish, put them in in the right order, and take care of them well. It is not very helpful with corals so don't buy it for that. The author is no-nonsense and easy to read.
this book was a very good choice to have in my library, the book was very good informed on the marine world,,very beautiful picts of the fish and detailed info was good, it was a large book with good refernces and a pleasure to read,, i wuld hight reccomed this book to keep in yur library as a reference book , u can never have enough of info on the marine enviroment, good to keep, the seller was prompt to send and book was in good condition, no markings,,
