I read this book because my 11 year old grandson has to read it for summer reading. My daughter sent it to my IPad so I could help him with his study questions. As a Language Arts teacher, I jumped at the chance. Especially since he's my boy! His teacher is brilliant to give this assignment. The book is rich with symbolism, descriptive language and very challenging. The story is about a 13 year old boy who throws a rock at "a crazy man who collects junk ". What happens as a result is magical. Redemption is the key word. The twists and turns come at a rapid pace and the end result is a masterpiece made from junk. It's impossible to get into the story because it has lots of sub themes. I highly recommend it to anyone who believes that beauty is inherent in anything if you look for it. There is a religious theme running throughout the story and it will soften even the hardest of hearts. Based on a real person, this book is for the young and mature as well. I read it in one night and it will stay with me for many many more to come. I marvel that this is being taught in 6th grade advanced classes. There is so much to take away from this story that I would love to observe how his teacher presents its depth.
The Seventh Most Important ThingOne of the things I like most about this book is the opportunity for growth. In today’s world, it is often easier to blame the circumstances of the individual for the actions taken in haste. Here these consequences lead to growth and a deeper understanding of the world around us and sometimes the rashness of our judgement.
My daughter needed this for a summer reading book in school. After poking though some of the pages myself... I read it and loved it too! an excellent story!
I was unaware that this story was based on the masterpiece of a real-life artist until the end, which surprised me in the most delightful way. It is a book about redemption and is wonderfully written. I have thought about this book even weeks after reading it.
Adult reader. A colleague actually recommended this as an easy read for a Community Leadership education program. I read it in one day and actually enjoyed it. It’s a surprisingly great story.
I got this book so my son and I had a book to read over the summer; it was on the suggested book list. I enjoyed the book and it has been fun to discuss it with my son (13-yrs old).
Excellent book, and the project they worked on in the story is on display at the Smithsonian Art museum in D.C.
Redemption is the theme of the book, The Seventh Most Important Thing. Redemption of junk into beauty. Redemption of poor choices...redemption of lives. This was such an unusual book. Thought provoking. After I read it I bought it for my 10 year old granddaughter. She loved it!
